As students entering the court reporting world and making the initial steps into stenography, your decision whether to start with a MANUAL writer (non-computerized) or with a REALTIME machine (computer capable) is an important one.
All of the following writers are recommended for students. The list includes both MANUAL and REALTIME writers:

If your budget is your primary concern as to which writer to initially purchase, please consider the fact that after a short period of time (2-3 months), when your speed has reached over 80-100 wpm, you instructor will recommend that you upgrade to a computer capable, REALTIME writer.
